FileMaker with iPhone, iPad and Blackberry integration
There are many situations where remote access to your FileMaker database could be of benefit to your business. Having the ability to view your customer's contact details, order history, or even directions to their place of business, whilst working remotely from your office, would no doubt make your life easier and improve productivity for you and your staff. Imagine being able to use an iPhone to create, edit and delete database records, perform calculations, run scripts, display portals and take photos that can be inserted into your database, or record sounds or signatures and all whilst maintaining 128 bit security.
At igeek we have been testing the options currently available to FileMaker and iPhone, iPad and Blackberry users, and we can now offer three solutions for remote database / iPhone / iPad / Blackberry integration :
- FileMaker Instant Web Publishing (IWP), enables FileMaker database access through a web browser such as Safari, which is part of the iPhone operating system. This solution has the advantage that no further software is required for your iPhone, and as such, is best suited to viewing data only.
- FileMaker PHP allows simplified remote FileMaker database access. Once again, because the FileMaker security model extends to web access, your customer data is still secure. Furthermore, as per IWP, no additional software is required for your iPhone. This solution is best suited for viewing and editing simple data.
- FMTouch is a new third party application, which allows you to carry a copy of your FileMaker database on your Mobile Device. The stored database is a remote copy and requires periodic synchronisation with your FileMaker server. However, it is a very robust solution that allows viewing and editing of your FileMaker database records. The FMTouch iPhone/iPad/Blackberry application must be purchased separately but the dependable functionality you gain is considerable.
